Chinese Herbal Medicine in London

Chinese herbal medicine reaches way back to the 3rd century BC and has been used to heal, cure, and rebalance patients for thousands of years. Today, there are over three hundred different herbs used in Chinese herbal medicine, each with their unique healing and preventive properties.

Chinese herbal medicine, as with all forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is premised on the Yin Yang philosophy, an idea that promotes balance. In this philosophy, the body’s energy flow, or “qi” is the source of life that sustains you and ensures you’re living your healthiest, happiest life. When your qi is blocked, or the meridians in your body become obstructed, your qi becomes unbalanced. This imbalance can lead to a range of physical, emotional and spiritual issues. For example, when our qi flows too vigorously, we may suffer from stress or anxiety, while low levels of qi can result in sluggish digestion.

Chinese herbal medicine uses the potent power of the natural world to help restore balance, revive energy, and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul.

What Are the Benefits of Chinese Herbal Medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years to heal a wide array of illnesses, including:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Eczema and other skin conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome and a range of digestive diseases
  • Urinary conditions
  • Asthma and respiratory diseases
  • Depression and lethargy
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Infertility
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Allergies and intolerances

As a holistic therapy, Chinese herbal medicine seeks to correct the imbalances in the body and promote the self-healing potential, rather than merely just treating symptoms. So, whatever your particular concern, your treatment will focus on your overall health and wellbeing. You can expect to feel happier, healthier and more in control of your health.

Popular Ingredients in Chinese Herbal Medicine

If you want to try this form of treatment, the first step is to consult your GP or medical professional to ensure Chinese herbal medicine is right for you. Although it’s generally safe to take, some western drugs are incompatible with these ancient herbal remedies.  So be on the safe side and consult with your doctor.

As with many holistic therapies, your first CHM session will begin with an initial consultation between you and the herbalist. Lasting between an hour and two hours, this time allows the herbalist an opportunity to find out more about your medical history, your issues, concerns, and your expectations of the treatment. Your herbalist may also undertake a brief physical examination, which may include:

  • Reading your pulse
  • Measuring your blood pressure
  • Examining your pupils
  • Massaging your abdomen

Once the herbalist has a clearer idea of your health and needs, they will then diagnose the root cause of your issues and plan your treatment. They will instruct you on how to take your medicine and at what time, and provide you with some insightful information about your treatment. Some commonly prescribed herbs include:

Ginger

Used commonly in both herbal medicine and cooking, ginger contains strong antimicrobial properties scientifically proven to boost your digestion. It also increases your lung capacity and pumps up your blood circulation. Ginger is also commonly prescribed for its anti-nausea effects, so is often given to those suffering from travel or morning sickness.

Salvia

Salvia is revered for its ability to promote circulation, lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and enhance liver function. More recently, it’s also been used to help heal damaged body tissue, chronic inflammation, traumatic injuries and infections.

Liquorice

Liquorice is known for its distinctive aniseed taste — you either love it or hate it! But thankfully, there’s more to liquorice than meets the eye. Liquorice root is used in Chinese herbal medicine as a way of neutralising toxins, relieving inflammation, and enhancing the digestive process. Certain western medicines even contain liquorice!

Ginseng

Ginseng is a bit of a superstar in CHM and is commonly known as the “youth herb”. Containing a substance known as ginsenosides, ginseng helps to normalise blood pressure, ease digestion and balance sugar levels in the blood. It also boosts energy, improves the respiratory system, and enhances the body’s immune system.
