Physiotherapy in London

Physiotherapy is a form of holistic treatment beloved by both wellness enthusiasts and the medical community alike. Physiotherapy is regularly prescribed by GPs as a safe and nurturing form of complementary therapy and is designed to restore movement and function, strengthen muscles, and aid with injury or illness recovery.

Although a science-based practise, physiotherapy doesn’t simply address the illness or ailment in the body. Instead, it takes a holistic approach to your health. In physiotherapy, your lifestyle, mental state and diet are all taken into account. By approaching your recovery in this way, physiotherapy also helps you to develop awareness about your health.  It empowers you to participate in your treatment, making you an active force in your recovery — rather than a passive recipient.

You can benefit from physiotherapy if you suffer from a neurological, neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular or respiratory disorder.

What Are the Benefits of Physiotherapy?

There are a whole host of reasons you might need to invest in physiotherapy. Combining “hands-on” care, a series of exercise prescriptions, and some homework, physiotherapy is a medically-recognised method for overcoming a range of health problems, such as:

  • Arthritis and other joint-related stiffness, swelling and pain.
  • Shoulder, back and neck pain.
  • Sports injuries
  • Issues with the nervous system and the brain, including Parkinsons and stroke.
  • Heart and circulatory issues
  • Respiratory issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic asthma
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pneumonia and immunity deficiencies

As a gentle and holistic form of therapy, physiotherapy can also be used for minor imbalances in the body and to boost overall health, strength and mobility. This therapy bestows innumerable benefits — increasing strength, boosting the cardio-respiratory function, easing chronic pain, and aiding mobility, flexibility and joint health.

What to Expect from a Physiotherapy Session?

Have you been referred to a physiotherapist by your GP? Or have you taken your health into your own hands and signed up for private sessions? Here’s what to expect.

A physiotherapy session will begin with a consultation between you and your therapist. In this time, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your issues, your goals for the sessions, and your more general medical history. The consultation is an essential part of your treatment as it allows the physiotherapist to get to know you better, so they can personalise your therapy.

Your therapist may also instruct you to undertake a short physical examination. Usually, this will consist of a series of small movements and adjustments that help the therapist gain a clearer insight into your issue and imbalances. Be sure to turn up in comfy, loose clothing and be prepared to take off layers around the affected area.

Once the consultation and examination are complete, your physiotherapist will put together your course of therapy and take you through each step of your treatment.  There are no hard and fast rules about what your physiotherapy should look like, but in general, it will use a mix of the following techniques:

  • Massage
  • Muscle and joint manipulation
  • Muscle-strength training exercises
  • Coordination therapy
  • Motion exercises
  • Ambulation exercises

Your therapist may also offer advice and exercises for you to practise at home to boost your recovery. And you may be required to schedule more sessions — depending on what you need out of your therapy.
